The purpose of this web site is to introduce the artist Eugene Dewey Hempel, Jr. and his lifetime of work. The web site is a rare glimpse into the thoughts and expressions of an artist spanning 40+ years of work. It shows the changes in style and the creative process at work.

Eugene Dewey Hempel, Jr. was born July 30, 1924. Because of his beginnings in America's heartland, his artwork was influenced by Midwest Regionalists such as Grant Wood, Emil Ganso, Mary Holmes, Lester Longman, and the philosopher mentor, John Dewey. This anti-modernist style, popular in the 1930s, depicts scenes of everyday life in various areas of the United States. His instruction and art education at University of Iowa, State University of Minnesota, University of California at Berkeley and at Los Angeles and San Jose.

These institutions influenced this artist's work. Teaching at three public secondary schools and three colleges for over three decades. and the West Costs artists of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay areas of Eugen Neuhaus, Glenn Wessels, Henry Shaefer-Simmern, John Steuart Curry, Thomas Hart Benton and the realistic style of the commercial and magazine cover artist of his times.
